September highlights Silverware, Jewellery and Glass

Philips' September Decorative Arts and Jewellery auctions were most successful, with great results particularly in the silverware, jewellery and glassware categories. An eager crowd of buyers jostled to acquire some wonderful examples, including a refined Georgian sterling silver swing handled bread basket, and a fine Paul Storr teapot, both of which achieved impressive results.

Quality silver is bringing good money and saw the 6th instalment of the Patrick Street Collection achieving great results, with many items finding new homes with prominent well known purchasers including the W.R. Furniture hits the right note

From one of Europe's largest and most highly regarded piano manufacturers comes a very special item to be offered in the Philips September auction. The Zimmerman piano company was founded in 1884 by a former employee of Steinway and Sons and grew to become synonymous with the German tradition of finely crafted musical instruments. This warm mahogany baby grand is in perfect condition, plays evenly, and is paired with a matching duet stool. The current owner has recently moved from England and is offering the piano for sale as his new house is too small to accommodate such a grand item.

Time for Tea!

Widely acknowledged as Britain’s leading silversmith of the 19th century, Paul Storr established a reputation for his fine work that ranged from household items, to major works commissioned by royalty. His famous PS mark distinguishes much of the silver ware purchased by both King George III and King George IV.

Of particular interest at the forthcoming September auction is an amazing sterling silver teapot bearing these initials. When offered at auction, Storr’s work is sure to attract great attention and this magnificent example of his work is no exception. The low oval teapot has a waisted collar and recessed lid, and is beautifully ornamented with guilloche, mesh and laurel leaf borders. The restrained Neoclassical design is evidenced in a crisp 'C' scroll handle with ivory insulators and striking paterae rim.

Birds of a Feather Puzzle Together

Setting a theme for this month’s decorative arts auction, illustrated and sculpted birds provide a decorative motif tying together several of the many desirable and picturesque items on offer.

An arresting baluster pair of Japanese vases from the Meiji period of the late 19th and early 20th centuries, illustrated in subtle tertiary colours with morning glory and decorative birds complements a wonderful Worcester lion’s foot reticulated urn produced by the celebrated English artist James Stinton. Strikingly populated by Aberdeen Finches, this handsome object features a blush ivory porcelain lattice collar and lid, and is fine example of this well-known artist’s oeuvre.
